Uniform Admission Tests for Public Universities

পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোর জন্য অভিন্ন ভর্তি পরীক্ষা

A report in this daily mentions that the University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman has criticised the authorities of public universities who continue to resist the idea of holding uniform admission tests when enrolling new students. In fact, the UGC has been wanting this for quite some time. President Abdul Hamid, chancellor of all public universities, has also, on several occasions, asked the public universities to make this move.

The reasoning behind such a uniform test seems simple: it will reduce the hassle and costs that students and their guardians have to bear when appearing for admission tests in different universities in different parts of the country. Sometimes, applicants have to travel to far-flung districts, which involves the cost of transport and accommodation. The whole process of appearing for exams in different public universities can take several months to finish, thus unnecessarily creating a break in a student's academic life.

Having a uniform admission test, which can be taken in centres near the applicant's place of residence, seems like a logical decision.

আবেদনকারীর থাকার জায়গার নিকটবর্তী কেন্দ্রগুলিতে অভিন্ন ভর্তি পরীক্ষা নেওয়া একটি যৌক্তিক সিদ্ধান্ত বলে মনে হয়।

Medical colleges already have such combined entrance exams and this significantly simplifies the admission process. We think that our higher education system may greatly benefit by introducing such uniform admission tests across the board as it would reduce the burden of cost and extra time on the students.

মেডিকেল কলেজগুলিতে ইতিমধ্যে এ জাতীয় সম্মিলিত প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষা রয়েছে এবং এটি ভর্তি প্রক্রিয়া উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে সহজ করে দেয়। আমরা মনে করি যে, সকল বোর্ডে এই জাতীয় অভিন্ন ভর্তি পরীক্ষা চালুর মাধ্যমে আমাদের উচ্চশিক্ষা ব্যবস্থা প্রচুর উপকৃত হতে পারে কারণ এতে শিক্ষার্থীদের উপর ব্যয় এবং অতিরিক্ত সময়ের বোঝা হ্রাস পাবে।

Obviously, introducing the system will require some planning and arranging of logistics for such tests. The exams would have to be foolproof, without scope of any kind of malpractice. Here, the UGC can take a proactive role so that the exams are held and checked efficiently and objectively. We hope that those public universities still resisting the change will base their decisions on the greater interest of those young men and women aspiring to study at a public university.

স্পষ্টতই, এই জাতীয় পরীক্ষার পদ্ধতিটি চালু করার জন্য কিছু পরিকল্পনা এবং রসদ ব্যবস্থা করা প্রয়োজন। পরীক্ষাগুলি কোনও ধরণের অপব্যবহারের সুযোগ ছাড়াই অব্যর্থ হতে হবে। এখানে, ইউজিসি একটি সক্রিয় ভূমিকা নিতে পারে, যাতে পরীক্ষাগুলি কার্যকর ও দক্ষতার সাথে নেয়া হয়। আমরা আশা করি যে, সেই পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলি এখনও পরিবর্তনের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিরোধ করছে, তারা পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়াশোনা করতে আগ্রহী সেই যুবক-যুবতীদের বৃহত্তর স্বার্থের ভিত্তিতে তাদের সিদ্ধান্তগুলি গ্রহণ করবে।
