Miss America Can be a Scientist

মিস আমেরিকা একজন বিজ্ঞানী হতে পারেন

Miss Virginia Camille Schrier, a 24-year-old scientist, was crowned Miss America 2020 and inspired young women across the country that Miss America can be a scientist too.

২৪ বছর বয়সী বিজ্ঞানী মিস ভার্জিনিয়া ক্যামিল শিয়ার  মিস আমেরিকা,২০২০ সম্মানে ভূষিত হন এবং সারা দেশের তরুণীদের অনুপ্রাণিত করেছিলেন যে, মিস আমেরিকা বিজ্ঞানীও হতে পারেন।

When you think Miss America, a competition consisting of beautiful women parading in swim suits and evening gowns comes to mind. But as it turned out, this year’s competition was not beauty pageant.

আপনি যখন মিস আমেরিকা নিয়ে ভাবেন, তখন সাঁতারের স্যুট এবং সন্ধ্যায় গাউন পরিহিত সুন্দরী মহিলাদের সমন্বয়ে একটি প্রতিযোগিতার কথা মনে আসে। তবে দেখা গেল, এই বছরের প্রতিযোগিতাটি শুধু সৌন্দর্য প্রতিযোগিতা ছিল না।

In lieu of the typical categories that favor physical appearance, the competition featured interviews and social impact initiatives. But the talent competition remained. While other finalists took the stage to sing or perform a dance number, Schrier donned a white lab coat and opted for a live chemistry experiment demonstrating the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide with potassium iodide (aka "elephant toothpaste"). When asked why a science experiment, Schrier replied, “Science is all around us! I’ve loved science since I was a little girl. It’s my mission to show kids that science is fun, relevant, and easy to understand.”

শারীরিক চেহারাকে সমর্থন করে এমন সাধারণ বিভাগগুলির পরিবর্তে প্রতিযোগিতায় সাক্ষাৎকার এবং সামাজিক উদ্যোগের দিকে নজর দেয়া হয়েছে। তবে প্রতিভার প্রতিযোগিতা থেকেই  যায়। যখন অন্য চূড়ান্ত প্রতিযোগীরা মঞ্চে গান ও নৃত্য পরিবেশন করে, তখন শ্যারি  একটি সাদা ল্যাব কোট পরিধান করেছিলেন এবং পটাসিয়াম আয়োডাইড (ওরফে "হাতি টুথপেস্ট") এর সাথে হাইড্রোজেন পেরোক্সাইডের অনুঘটকীয় ক্ষয় প্রদর্শনের জন্য একটি জীবন্ত রসায়ন পরীক্ষার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিলেন। মঞ্চে একটি বিজ্ঞান পরীক্ষা কেন জানতে চাইলে শ্যারিয়ার উত্তর দিয়েছিলেন, “বিজ্ঞান আমাদের চারপাশে! আমি যখন ছোট ছিলাম তখন থেকেই আমি বিজ্ঞানকে ভালবাসি। বাচ্চাদের দেখানো আমার লক্ষ্য যে বিজ্ঞানটি মজাদার, প্রাসঙ্গিক এবং সহজে বোঝা যায়।”

The 24-year-old scientist graduated cum laude with degrees in both biochemistry and biology. She’s currently pursuing a doctor of pharmacy degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. As the newly crowned Miss America, Schrier will take a year off school to fulfill her duties

২৪ বছর বয়সী এই বিজ্ঞানী জৈব রসায়ন এবং জীববিজ্ঞান উভয় ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেছেন। তিনি বর্তমানে ভার্জিনিয়া কমনওয়েলথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ফার্মাসি ডিগ্রি অর্জন করছেন। সদ্য অভিজাত মিস আমেরিকা হিসাবে, শ্যারিয়ার তার দায়িত্ব পালনের জন্য স্কুল থেকে এক বছর সময় নিবে।

"Miss America is someone that needs to educate, be able to communicate with everyone, and that’s what I do as a woman of science. And we need to show that Miss America can be a scientist and that a scientist can be Miss America." said Miss Virginia Camille Schrier.

মিস ভার্জিনিয়া ক্যামিল শিয়ার বলেন, "মিস আমেরিকা হল এমন একজন যাকে শিক্ষিত হতে হবে, প্রত্যেকের সাথে যোগাযোগ করতে সক্ষম হতে হবে এবং  বিজ্ঞানের মহিলা হিসাবে কি কি কাজ করা যায়,আমি তা করি । আমাদের দেখাতে হবে যে মিস আমেরিকা একজন বিজ্ঞানী হতে পারে এবং কোন বিজ্ঞানী মিস আমেরিকা হতে পারেন।"
