In the passing of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed the country has lost a humanitarian of the highest order, whose mission in life was the betterment of the poor. His humanitarian propensities (প্রবণতা) became evident after the devastating cyclone of 1970 when he mastered his efforts to reach succor (ত্রাণ) to the thousands of helpless people of the coastal district of the country, particularly in the island of Manpura, which had lost three quarters of its population.

স্যার ফজলে হাসান আবেদের মৃত্যুতে দেশ একজন সর্বোচ্চ পর্যায়ের  মানবিক লোককে হারিয়েছে, যার জীবনের লক্ষ্য ছিল দরিদ্রদের উন্নতি। ১৯৭০ সালের ধ্বংসাত্মক ঘূর্ণিঝড়ের পরে তাঁর মানবিক প্রবণতা স্পষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে, যখন তিনি দেশের উপকূলীয় এলাকার হাজার হাজার অসহায় মানুষের কাছে ত্রাণ পৌঁছে দেয়ার জন্য সর্বোচ্চ প্রয়াস চালান, বিশেষত মনপুরা দ্বীপে যা এর জনসংখ্যার তিন ভাগের এক ভাগ হারিয়েছিল।

And very soon after the Liberation War, Sir Fazle understood that there was a need to strut government efforts to tackle the post-war devastation by other means, particularly the efforts of organised, non-state actor and this led to the formation of Brac. The organisation, under his stewardship (নেতৃত্বে), provided essential services to millions of poor Bangladeshis and today Brac is the world’s largest NGO working in 11 countries. If a person’s success is measured by the number of people whose lives, he or she has been able to affect positively, then Sir Fazle has touched the lives of millions.

এবং মুক্তিযুদ্ধের পর খুব শীঘ্রই, স্যার ফজলে বুঝতে পেরেছিলেন যে, যুদ্ধ-পরবর্তী ধ্বংসযজ্ঞকে কাটিয়ে উঠার জন্য সরকারি প্রচেষ্টার পাশাপাশি অন্যান্য মাধ্যমের প্রয়োজন, বিশেষত একটি সংগঠিত, বেসরকারি উদ্যোগ, যা ব্র্যাক গঠনের পথ দেখিয়েছিল। সংস্থাটি তাঁর নেতৃত্বে লক্ষ লক্ষ দরিদ্র বাংলাদেশিকে প্রয়োজনীয় পরিষেবা প্রদান করেছিল এবং আজ ব্র্যাক বিশ্বের বৃহত্তম এনজিও যা ১১ টি দেশে কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করছে। যদি কোন ব্যক্তির সাফল্য এমন ব্যক্তির সংখ্যা দ্বারা পরিমাপ করা হয় যাদের জীবন সে ইতিবাচকভাবে প্রভাবিত করতে সক্ষম হয়েছে, তবে স্যার ফজলে লক্ষ লক্ষ মানুষের জীবনকে প্রভাবিত করেছে।

He has pioneered issues like poverty reduction, primary education, enhancing skills, microfinance, agriculture and enterprise development. In education, Brac has played a leading role in promoting education at the primary level. The organisation has done much in the field of microfinance and to extend credit facilities to the poorest. Sir Fazle dreamt of a Bangladesh free of poverty and has received due recognition both at home and internationally. He was knighted in 2010 for his outstanding work in alleviating poverty, especially of women and children. 

তিনি দারিদ্র্য হ্রাস, প্রাথমিক শিক্ষা, দক্ষতা বৃদ্ধি, ক্ষুদ্রঋণ, কৃষি এবং উদ্যোক্তা উন্নয়নের মত বিষয়গুলির সূচনা করেছেন। শিক্ষাক্ষেত্রে, ব্র্যাক প্রাথমিক স্তরে শিক্ষার প্রচারে অগ্রণী ভূমিকা পালন করেছে। সংস্থাটি ক্ষুদ্র ঋণ ক্ষেত্রে এবং দরিদ্রতমদের ঋণ সুবিধা প্রসারিত করার ক্ষেত্রে অনেক কিছু করেছে। স্যার ফজলে দারিদ্র্যমুক্ত বাংলাদেশের স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলেন এবং স্বদেশে ও আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে স্বীকৃতি পেয়েছেন। ২০১০ সালে দারিদ্র্য দূরীকরণে (বিশেষত নারী ও শিশুদের) অসামান্য কাজের জন্য তিনি নাইট উপাধি পেয়েছিলেন।

The nation will be grateful to him for instilling in us the very critical self-confidence that we can overcome our woes. The institutions he has built are a legacy for not only Bangladesh but also for the rest of the world.

আমরা আমাদের দুর্দশাগুলি কাটিয়ে উঠতে পারি এই অতিপ্রয়োজনীয় আত্মবিশ্বাস আমাদের মধ্যে প্রবেশ করানোর জন্য জাতি তাঁর প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞ থাকবে। তিনি যে প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলি তৈরি করেছেন সেগুলি কেবল বাংলাদেশের নয়, বিশ্বের অন্যান্য অংশের ঐতিহ্য ধারণ করে।
