1. A is two years older than B who is twice as old as C. If the total age of A, B and C is 27, then how old is B?

Suppose,

The age of C is = x.

 So, the age of B is = 2x.

So, the age of A is = 2x+2.

According to the question:

 2x+2+2x+x = 27

 or, x = 5

So, the age of B = 2x = 10.

2. A person crosses a 600 meters long street in 5 minutes. What is his speed in kilometers per hour?

The man crosses,

 in 5 minutes = 600 meters

in 60 minutes = 600x60/5 = 7200 meters = 7200/1000 km = 7.2 km

So, his speed is 7.2 kilometers per hour.

3. For what value of 'k' will the pair of equations 3x+4y = 12 and kx+12y = 30 does not have a unique solution?

A pair of equations ax+by = c

 And

 dx+ey = f

 will not have a unique solution,

 if a/d = b/e.

The given pair of equation will not have a unique solution,

 If

 3/k = 4/12

Or, k = 9

4. Find the area of a right angled triangle whose hypotenuse is 10 cm and base 8cm.

Height =√(Hypotenuse2 - Base2)  = √36 = 6

Area = ½  x base x height = ½  x 8 x 6 = 24 sq. cm.

5. In a sequence of 8 consecutive integers, how much greater is the sum of the last four integers than the sum of the first four integers?

Suppose,

 the numbers are 1 to 8.

 The difference = (8+7+6+5)-(1+2+3+4) = 26-10 = 16.

6. If x = 80%, by what percent is x larger than x2?

x = 80% x = 80%x80% = 64%

x is larger than x2  by = (80-64)/64 = 25%,

7. If a series looks like 1, 1.5, 2.5, 4, ... then which of the following comes next in the sequence?

The series can be written as: 2/2, 3/2,5/2, 812, ... The numerators are in the pattern: 2, 3, (sum of previous two terms), (sum of previous two terms), and so on So, the next numerator should be the sum of its previous two terms = 5+8 = 13. The denominator remains unchanged.

So, the next term in the given sequence = 13/2 = 6.5.

8. In a group of 60 people, 27 people like Coca Cola and 42 people like Pepsi Cola. Each person likes at least one of the two drinks. How many of these people like both Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola?

Total = Coca Cola + Pepsi - Both

 Both = 42+27 - 60 = 9,

12. A man's regular pay is Taka 30 per hour up to 40 hours. Overtime is twice the payment for regular time. If he was paid Taka 1680, how many hours overtime did he work?

Up to 40 hours' work,

 the man is paid = 40x30 = 1200 taka.

So, overtime work hour = (1680-1200)/(2x30) = 8 hours.

13. The length of a rectangle is twice than that of its breadth. If the length of the rectangle is increased by 10%, while its breadth is decreased by 10% what is the percentage change in the perimeter?

Original breadth is x, and length is 2x.

Perimeter = 2(2x+x) = 6x

New, breadth is 0.9x, and length is 2.2x.

Perimeter = 2(2.2x+0.9x) = 6.2x

Increase percentage = 0.2/6 = 3.33%

14. A can complete a project in 20 days and B can complete the same project in 30 days. A and B start working on the project together and A quits 10 days before the project is expected to be completed. How many days in total will the project take to complete?

Expected time to complete the project = 1/(1/20 + 1/30) = 60/5 = 12 days.

So, A left the project after 12-10 = 2 days.

Suppose, the project will take x days in total to complete.

So, 2/20 + x/30 = 1 or, x/30 = 9/10 so, x = 27

15. A fruit seller had some apples. He sold 40% apples and still has 420 apples left. Originally he had?

60% of apples = 420.

So, 100% of apples = 420x100/60 = 700

16. What percentage of numbers from 1 to 70 has 1 or 9 in the unit digits?

The numbers are : 1, 9, 11, 19, 21, 29, 31, 39, 41,49, 51, 59,6169.

In total there are 14 such numbers.

So, the percentage required is = 14/70 = 20%.

17. A bag contains 2 red, 3 green and 2 blue balls. If two balls are drawn at random, what is the probability that none of the balls drawn is blue?

Total number of balls = 2+3+2 = 7. Number of non-blue balls = 2+3 = 5 Probability = (5C2)/(7C2) = 10/21. ans.

18. If one of the roots of the quadratic equation x+mx+24 is 1.5, then what is the value of m?

One of the roots of the equation is 1.5. So, for x = 1.5, the value of the equation will be equal to zero.

Substituting the value of x (1.5) we get: (1.5 = 3/2) (3/2) + 3m/2 + 24 = 0

or, 914 + 3m/2 + 24 = 0

or, 9 + 6m + 96 = 0

or, 6m = - 105

So, m = -105/6 = -17.5

19. A number when divided by a divisor leaves a remainder of 24. When twice the original number is divided by the same divisor, the remainder is 11, what is the value of the divisor?

From the first condition we get, the divisor is greater than 24. When the number is doubled, the remainder should be double (24x2 = 48). But this time, the divisor is only 11. So, the divisor must be = 48-11 = 37.

20. 10 cats caught 10 rats in 10 seconds. How many cats are required to catch 100 rats in 100 seconds?

10 cats' 10 seconds' work = catching of 10 rats

10 cats' 1 seconds' work = catching of 10/10 rats = catching of 1 rat.

10 cats' 100 seconds' work = catching of 1 x 100 rats = catching of 100 rats.

So, to catch 100 rats in 100 seconds only 10 cats are required.

21. The average wage of a worker during a fortnight comprising 15 consecutive working days was Taka 90 per day. During the first 7 days, his average wage was Taka 87 per day and the average wage during the last 7 days was Taka 92 per day. What was his wage on the 8 day?

Total wage of 15 days = 15 x 90 = 1350 taka

 Total wage of 14 days = 7x87 +7x92 = 1253 taka

 Wage of the 8th day = 1350-1253 = 97 taka.

22. Halim purchased brand A pen for Taka 200 each and brand B pen for Taka 100 each. If he purchased a total of 8 of these pens for Taka 1200, how many pens of brand A did he purchase?

Suppose,

he purchased x units of brand A pen,

 and

(8-x) units of brand B pen

According to the question:

200x + 100(8-x) = 1200

or, 100x = 400

So, x = 4

23. Ahad buys 80 kg sugar at Taka 40 per kg and 40 kg rice at Taka 50 per kg. At what price approximately in Taka per kg should he sell to make a profit of 10% on Cost?

Total cost of sugar = 80x40 = 3200 taka

Total cost of rice = 40x50 = 2000 taka

 So, total cost of rice and sugar = 3200+2000 = 5200 taka

Total quantity of rice and sugar = 80 + 40 kg = 120kg

At 10% profit,

selling price = 5200 x 1.1 = 5720 taka Selling price per kg = 5720/120 = 47.7 taka

24. Find the ratio of purchase price to sell price if there is loss of 12.5%

If cost is = 100,

 then at 12.5% loss,

selling price is = 100-(100x12.5%) = 87.5

 Ratio = 100 : 87.5 = 1000 : 875 = 8 : 7
