1) A boat takes 3 hours to travel to a certain distance with the stream, and returns to the original place in 5 hours. How long will it take to travel the same distance in stationary Water?

Solution:

Assume that,

the speed of the boat in stationary Water is m kmph, the rate of the stream is n kmph, and the distance is D km.

Here we get,

m+n = D/3 ----------- (i)

 m-q = D/5 ----------- (ii)

By adding (i) and (ii)

We get,

2m = D/3 + D/5

or,2m = 8D/15

or,m = 4D/15

so,The  time it will take to cover the distance in stationary water is = D/m = D/(4D/15) = 1.5/4 hrs = 3 hrs and 45mins.

2) A man has Tk300000. He invests a part of the amount at 8%, and the remaining amount at 10% p.a. At the end of the year he earns a profit of TK25600 from his entire investment. Find the amount he invested under each rate.

Solution:

Assume that,

He invested Tk. X at 8% rate.

So, he invested Tk (300000-X) at 10% rate.

According to the question,

0.08X + 0.1(300000-X) = 25600

Or,.0.08X + 30000 - 0.1 X = 25600

Or, X =  220000

So, he invested 220000 tk  at 8% rate, and

(300000-220000) tk  or 80000 tk  at 10% rate.

3) M purchased a 30-inch TV whose height was 18 inches. If the size of a TV is expressed as the lengths of its diagonal, find the width of the TV M purchased.

Solution:

Suppose,

the width of the TV is = X  inches.

According to the question:

X2 + 182 = 302

Or, X2 = 900 - 324 = 576

or, X= 24

4) The ratio of the girls and boys in a class was 2:5. If two new girls join the class, the ratio becomes 1:2. What was the total number of students in the class?

Solution:

Assume that,

there were 2m girls in the class.

As the ratio of the girls and boys in the class was 2:5, the number of boys in the class was = 2m x 5/2 = 5m

according to the question,

(2m-2): (5m) = 1 : 2

or,(2m-2)/(5m) = 1/2

5m= 4m + 4

m = 4

So, the total number of students in the class was = 2m+5m = 7m = 7x4 = 28.

5) How many liters of 15% salt solution must be added to 5 liters of 8% salt solution to get a 10% salt solution?

Solution:

Suppose,

X liters of 15% should be added.

Here,

(0.15X + 5 x 0.08) / (X+5) = 0.10

or, 0.15X + 0.4 = 0.10X + 0.5

0.15X - 0.10X = 0.5 - 0.4

or, 0.05X = 0.1

or,5X = 10

or,X = 2

Ans: 2 liters.
